Chalk-o-late Santas ~ HOW SWEET IT IS!

As we turn the pages of Santa's Scrapbook, we find yet another charming and popular piece of "Santa Claus" history----the once purposeful, and now highly collectible antique chocolate mold. The select few, who early on, found the intrigue of collecting these would proudly display them in their kitchens. Now, more than ever, the race is on to acquire these prized molds, not only for show, but for chalkware and papier mache castings. Though, it may sound shocking, some collectors have gladly paid $1000+ for that special rare piece.

These molds of St. Nicholas, Father Christmas, Belsnickles and Santa originally formed delightfully detailed and delectable chocolate candy for many a children at Christmastime. Imagine the size of some of the grandest molds...how about Anton Reiche's Father Christmas #11166 circa 1912 measuring in at a SWEET 32"...that's lots - o' - chocolate!!!

While 19th century Germans used papier-mache, early Pennsylvania-Germans molded similar figures from plaster. Due to the fragility of the early papier-mache pieces, collectors face the challenge of finding one in good condition... moreover the inflated price-tag that goes with it.

Today, Hodgepodge Cottage offers Chalk-o-late Santas and rabbits; affordable chalkware castings from the same treasured antique molds --each uniquely hand-painted, signed, numbered and dated.

With many Chalk-o-lates to choose from, you can start your own collection of tomorrow's heirlooms----what better way of linking directly to the past! Special custom-color-scheme orders are always welcome.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
  • Born a hundred years too late, Diane Cheffy lives and breathes Victorian! Life in a historic ca. 1900 Classic Cottage style house in Colorado Springs, Colorado for the past 19 years has become more of a hodgepodge cottage of Victoriana --antique and holiday potpourri. This miscellany has also been reflected in her work. She has been a contributor to “Highlights for Children”, “Highlights Puzzlemania”, and “Delta Airlines Fantastic Flyer.” She also writes articles as the “Colorado Springs Landmarks & Historic Districts Examiner” on Examiner.com. Victorians would save postcards, greeting cards, and advertising trade cards –these prized lithograph images are what make the old scrapbooks so valuable today. Diane at Hodgepodge Cottage uses and shares these same reproduced images in many of her projects; Victorian-style wooden puzzle blocks, holiday tree ornaments, magnets, candy sleighs, and gift boxes! To a “hodgepodger,” anything from juice can lids to cappuchino containers can be repurposed to create something new and different. Passionate about Christmas –Santa in particular, Diane found her true niche in creating chalkware from antique chocolate molds. Each piece is uniquely hand-painted, dated, signed and numbered. Several pieces of her artwork were featured in Wendy Mullen’s 2005 book, “The Comprehensive Guide to Chocolate Molds: Objects of Art & Artists' Tools.”
